Start by Understanding Why the Existing Lawn Failed

Replacing grass without identifying the cause of its decline can repeat the same outcome. Walk the yard and note persistent shade, heavily traveled routes, pet-use areas, thin soil, weeds, dry strips and low places that remain wet. Look for runoff paths after rain or irrigation. Check whether damage follows the edge of a driveway, a sprinkler pattern or a construction area.

Some clues point to more than one possible cause. A brown patch may result from poor coverage, compacted soil, heat reflected from pavement or a grass type unsuited to the site. A soggy area may reflect a low grade, slow infiltration or an irrigation leak. Record the pattern rather than treating the visible grass as the whole problem.

Also consider whether turf is appropriate everywhere. A deeply shaded corner, narrow strip or steep bank may be difficult to mow and irrigate even after careful preparation. Adjusting the lawn boundary can be more practical than forcing sod into a location where it is unlikely to perform well.

Inspect Irrigation Before Sod Arrives
